Renton international grocery shopping does not happen in one district. It is spread across the city in a way that maps neatly onto its neighborhoods: Uwajimaya anchors Renton Village on S Grady Way, Viet-Wah and Vitmar Euro Food sit on NE Sunset Boulevard in the Highlands, two carnicerias serve North Renton and the Highlands, and a new South Asian grocer has opened along 108th Avenue SE in south Renton. For a home cook, that means Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Eastern European and Indian pantries are each within a short drive, and which one is closest depends on where you live.
This guide covers the Renton international grocery stores we send clients to, with each one placed at its street address and neighborhood, plus the everyday grocers, the Tuesday farmers market and the big Filipino supermarket just over the city line in Tukwila. After more than 26 years guiding families through Renton, we have learned that the grocery question comes up in the first week of house hunting more often than the school question. Every business named below was confirmed at its address in September 2026.

Why Renton International Grocery Runs So Deep
Renton’s grocery aisles reflect its people. In the 2020 Census, roughly six in ten Renton residents identified as people of color, with the city recorded as 26 percent Asian, 15.5 percent Hispanic or Latino, about 10 percent Black and 7 percent multiracial. A 2022 WalletHub study ranked Renton 16th among the most culturally diverse cities in the country, one of three Washington cities in the top 20 alongside Kent and Federal Way. When that many communities share one city, steady demand for the right rice, the right chiles and the right cut of meat follows, and markets open to meet it.
The result works at two levels. Restaurants give you the night out, and the markets give you the means to cook the same food at home on a Tuesday. The two feed each other, which is one reason the city’s dining scene is so much stronger than its commuter-suburb reputation suggests. Our Renton dining guide covers the restaurant side of that story.
For families relocating from more homogenous parts of the country, this is often the first pleasant surprise. Finding fresh lemongrass, gochujang, masa or whole spices ten minutes from the house makes a new city feel livable faster, and it is one of the first things we point out to clients arriving from out of state. Our 30-day relocation plan builds the first grocery run into week one for exactly that reason.
Where Are the Renton International Grocery Stores?
The Renton international grocery map has two centers of gravity rather than one: Renton Village on S Grady Way, just south of the I-405 interchange, and the NE Sunset Boulevard corridor through the Highlands. Smaller specialty shops fill in around North Renton, the valley and south Renton. Here is how they break down, by neighborhood.
Uwajimaya at Renton Village, S Grady Way
Uwajimaya is the marquee Asian grocer in Renton, and it is worth being precise about where it sits. The store is at 501 S Grady Way in the Renton Village shopping center, on the retail corridor directly south of I-405 and below Talbot Hill, a few minutes’ drive from the downtown core rather than in it. Open since 2009, the Renton store runs more than 30,000 square feet and covers produce, specialty meats, a seafood department with live tanks for oysters and shellfish, a deli with sushi and prepared Asian dishes, in-house roasted barbecue pork, chicken and duck, and an Oasis Tea Zone bubble tea counter. It does not have the Kinokuniya bookstore or food court of the Seattle flagship, but for weekly Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Filipino pantry shopping it is the most complete single stop in the city. Hours are 9 am to 9 pm daily.
Viet-Wah and Vitmar on NE Sunset Boulevard, Renton Highlands
The Highlands is the true international food spine of Renton, and NE Sunset Boulevard is its main street. Viet-Wah Asian Food Market at 2825 NE Sunset Blvd is the company’s one remaining store after the original Seattle Little Saigon location closed, and it moved into this 16,000-square-foot space in April 2016. It is strongest on Vietnamese and broader Southeast Asian staples, with a deli, bubble tea, a live seafood tank, kitchenware and services like Western Union in the same building. Hours are 9 am to 8 pm daily, with free parking.
A mile and a half farther east, Vitmar Euro Food at 4033 NE Sunset Blvd, Unit 4, is the reason Highlands residents rarely drive to Seattle for Eastern European groceries. The shop carries cured meats, cheeses, pelmeni, pastries, wines and a rye bread baked on site, with a deli counter that draws people from well beyond the neighborhood. If the Highlands is on your shortlist, our Renton Highlands neighborhood guide and our look at the Sunset neighborhood mixed-use core explain how the corridor is changing.
Carnicerias in the Highlands and North Renton
Renton’s Mexican groceries are neighborhood carnicerias rather than one big supermercado, and there are three worth knowing. Carniceria La Chiquita, at 1314 Union Ave NE, Suite 9, in the east Highlands, has been in business since 1996 and pairs a full meat counter with a bakery, open 9 am to 9 pm every day. Ay Jalisco Tienda Mexicana y Carniceria, at 108 Factory Ave N, Suite 1, sits in North Renton just off the I-405 exit at Sunset Boulevard N, with a butcher counter, fresh produce, snacks and seasonings, and a reputation for its tamales and chicharrones. Carniceria Los Compadres, at 419 Rainier Ave N, serves the Rainier Avenue side of North Renton with a meat market and grocery. Between them, fresh masa, dried chiles, crema and cuts for carne asada are never more than a few minutes from downtown.
DK Market in the valley and Sabzi Mandi in south Renton
Two more stores round out the Renton international grocery picture. DK Market, at 720 Lind Ave SW in the commercial valley west of downtown off SW Grady Way, is a large market that stocks across regions, with Asian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European and Latin American pantry items, a big spice selection and a produce section, open 8 am to 7 pm daily. On the south side of the city, Sabzi Mandi International Foods and Groceries opened in 2026 at 17622 108th Ave SE with South Asian produce, spices, lentils and snacks, a Chaat n Chaska street-food counter serving samosas and gol gappe, and daily hours of 10 am to 8:30 pm. It accepts EBT and SNAP. Indian home cooks in Renton used to drive to Kent or Bellevue for this; now they do not have to.
If a city where you can shop and cook the food of almost anywhere appeals to you, we would love to help you find a home near the markets you will actually use. Contact The Rache Team and we will map the neighborhoods against your grocery list.
Everyday Grocers, the Farmers Market and Skyway
The specialty markets sit on top of a full set of everyday grocers. Full-size supermarkets line NE Sunset Boulevard in the Highlands, S Grady Way at Renton Village and the Rainier Avenue S corridor, and our Renton shopping guide covers those anchors along with IKEA and The Landing.
From June through September, the Renton Farmers Market adds a Tuesday layer downtown. It runs 3 to 7 pm at Piazza Park, 233 Burnett Ave S, and its 2026 season closes on September 29. The produce tables reflect the same international city the markets do: recent weeks have carried bok choy, chayote and Chinese spinach next to heirloom tomatoes, with kimchi, chamoy, tamales, empanadas, steamed buns and Mexican and ube pastries on the prepared side. If you are reading this after the season ends, the market returns on Tuesdays next June.
Skyway-West Hill is worth a separate note. Its small restaurant strip on Renton Avenue S runs to soul food, Vietnamese, halal Cham and Mexican cooking, and its everyday grocer is the Grocery Outlet at 11656 68th Ave S, which ended a five-year stretch without a supermarket when it opened in 2013. For specialty international groceries, Skyway residents drive rather than walk, either down to Rainier Avenue in Renton or north into Seattle’s Rainier Valley. Our Skyway-West Hill guide covers the neighborhood in full.
One more stop belongs on the list even though it is across the city line. Seafood City Supermarket, at 1368 Southcenter Mall, Suite 100, in Tukwila, is the region’s Filipino supermarket, and for households in Renton’s southwest neighborhoods it is often a shorter drive than Uwajimaya.
What Can You Cook From Renton International Grocery Aisles?
The reach of the Renton international grocery network is easiest to appreciate by what it lets you make on an ordinary weeknight. Pho, bun and banh mi from Viet-Wah’s shelves. Sushi rice, dashi, Korean banchan and marinated barbecue cuts from Uwajimaya. Carne asada, fresh tortillas and salsa verde from any of the three carnicerias. Pelmeni, borscht and a proper rye loaf from Vitmar. Dal, biryani and a stack of fresh chapati flour from Sabzi Mandi. Lumpia, pancit and longganisa from Seafood City a few minutes down I-405.
That variety changes how households eat over time. When the ingredients are easy, families fold those flavors into the regular rotation rather than saving them for special occasions, and the ordinary Saturday errand starts to look like a small tour: live shellfish from Uwajimaya, produce and kimchi from the farmers market, a bag of tamales from Ay Jalisco on the way home. That kind of choice is not a given in every suburb, and it is a quiet part of why people who move to Renton tend to stay.
Which Renton Neighborhoods Put You Closest to the Markets?
Because the Renton international grocery stores are spread across the city, the right neighborhood depends on which markets you will use most. A few honest trade-offs:
- Renton Highlands. The strongest single answer for international grocery access. Viet-Wah, Vitmar and La Chiquita are all on or just off NE Sunset Boulevard, with full-size supermarkets on the same corridor. Larger lots and newer housing stock come with it. Uwajimaya is a ten-minute drive down the hill.
- Talbot Hill. Sits directly above Renton Village, so Uwajimaya is the neighborhood grocery store. Our Talbot Hill guide covers the streets closest to S Grady Way.
- Downtown Renton and North Renton. Walkable to the farmers market, the downtown cafes and Ay Jalisco, with Los Compadres on Rainier Avenue N and Uwajimaya a short drive across I-405. Our Downtown Renton homes guide explains what the city is building around Piazza Park.
- South Renton along 108th Avenue SE. Closest to Sabzi Mandi and a straight run down to Kent’s larger international supermarkets.
- Skyway-West Hill. A small, independent restaurant strip on Renton Avenue S, but specialty groceries are a drive. Buyers who cook a lot from scratch should weigh that.
There is no single right answer, only the trade-off that fits your routine. We help clients weigh proximity to the markets they use against the home, the lot and the commute, so the everyday errands feel easy once you move in.
Frequently Asked Questions About Renton International Grocery Stores
What are the main Renton international grocery stores?
The largest are Uwajimaya at 501 S Grady Way in Renton Village and Viet-Wah Asian Food Market at 2825 NE Sunset Blvd in the Highlands. Vitmar Euro Food on NE Sunset Boulevard covers Eastern European groceries, Carniceria La Chiquita, Ay Jalisco and Carniceria Los Compadres cover Mexican groceries, DK Market on Lind Ave SW stocks across several regions, and Sabzi Mandi on 108th Ave SE is a South Asian grocer that opened in 2026.
Is Uwajimaya in downtown Renton?
No. Uwajimaya’s Renton store is at 501 S Grady Way in the Renton Village shopping center, on the retail corridor just south of I-405 and below Talbot Hill. It is a few minutes’ drive from the downtown core, not a walk. The store is open 9 am to 9 pm daily.
Where is the Renton international grocery selection strongest?
The Renton Highlands, along NE Sunset Boulevard. Viet-Wah, Vitmar Euro Food and Carniceria La Chiquita are all on or just off that corridor, alongside full-size supermarkets. Renton Village on S Grady Way is the other center, anchored by Uwajimaya. Which is closer for you depends on the cuisines you cook most.
Why does Renton have so many international markets?
Renton is one of the most diverse cities in Washington. In the 2020 Census about six in ten residents identified as people of color, including 26 percent Asian and 15.5 percent Hispanic or Latino, and a 2022 WalletHub study ranked the city 16th nationally for cultural diversity. That population sustains full markets and small specialty shops rather than a single international aisle in one supermarket.
Do I need to drive to Seattle for international ingredients?
For most cuisines, no. Uwajimaya, Viet-Wah, Vitmar, the three carnicerias, DK Market and Sabzi Mandi cover Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Mexican, Eastern European and South Asian cooking inside the city, and Seafood City in Tukwila covers Filipino groceries a few minutes down I-405. Specialty items can still warrant a Seattle trip, but day to day, most Renton home cooks find what they need close to home.
Can I buy fresh produce at the Renton Farmers Market too?
Yes. The Renton Farmers Market runs Tuesdays from 3 to 7 pm, June through September, at Piazza Park, 233 Burnett Ave S, in downtown Renton. The 2026 season closes September 29. Its produce tables regularly carry Asian and Latin American vegetables alongside Washington fruit, and prepared-food vendors sell kimchi, tamales, empanadas and steamed buns.
